AMPed in Hong Kong

On June 24, 2015, ten students and two academics set off to Hong Kong on QUT’s School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations’ first study tour.

For two weeks the group were immersed in the hustle and bustle of Asia’s World City, visiting industry, embracing culture, and eating too much dim sum. We were lucky enough to be there.

Industry visits with decision-makers from global agencies including Edelman, Publicis, OMD and DigitasLBi provided a real world insight into Hong Kong’s public relations and advertising industry.

Hotel Jen’s Director of Communications, Mellisa Gillies, and Tourism Australia’s HK Manager, Carmen Tam, provided an in-house perspective on creating a brand able to cut through the ‘noise.’

NowTV Sport gave the group an inside look at running a pay-to-view TV platform and a glimpse at what in-game sports advertising will look like in the future.

QUT alumnus and renowned blogger Geneva Vanderzeil talked the group through the dos and don’ts of running high profile social media accounts. Her tips for any aspiring bloggers were:

  • Find your niche
  • Know your audience
  • Post regularly
  • Be carefully when it comes to sponsored content
  • Be creative and embrace the path less travelled!

David Ketchum, CEO of Current Asia and previous VP of Calvin Klein, bestowed his wisdom of embracing emerging markets and trends to stay relevant if you want a dynamic and successful career.

One of the key learnings was how brands use Hong Kong as a gateway into China, and Doctor Kara Chan of Hong Kong Baptist University’s ‘Branding in China’ workshop highlighted why the Chinese market needs tailored campaigns. They think KFC is a classy choice for dinner!

Days off were spent cruising the harbour, hiking and enjoying the amazing food Hong Kong has to offer. The group's top tips for Hong Kong are:

  1. Dragon’s Back Hike
  2. Llama Island
  3. Ladies Markets
  4. Sugar Lounge at East Hotel
  5. Tim Ho Wan (try the Barbecue Pork Buns!)

If you want to get a more in depth insight into the industry visits or tourist activities check out the groups blogs on QUT’s Business Student Experience Blog.

Hong Kong quickly became a go-to career destination for the group after an amazing two weeks discovering the professional and cultural side of the new world city. Keep your eyes peeled for the School of AMPR’s next study tour, the experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
